Dear Carol,

I am so happy that you wrote. This is one of my lines. When we have the
roll call of families at the annual reunion, I get to stand up for many of
my other Germanna ancestors along with other attendees but heretofore I
have been the only one who had STIGLER. You MUST come to the reunion next
summer.

The James Stigler to whom you refer was b. abt 1709, bought land in VA in
1743 and died before 2 May 1765 in Hanover, King George, VA. He was the
father of Samuel STIGLER b.abt. 1729. Samuel is listed in the Germanna
Settlers group as one of the "Hebron Church Germans". He came to
Culpeper/Madison County from King George County about 1764-1765 and resided
there until sometime between 1785 and 1791 when he received bounty land in
Nelson County, KY. Samuel's daughter, Martha Patty or Patsy STIGLER,
married Michael SNYDER (the son of John b.abt. 1755) in Culpeper about
1779. The STIGLER-SNYDER children married YAGER, WAYLAND, 2-FRAYS, AYLOR,
PEYTON, 2-TAYLORS, THORNTON and Reverend Thornton RUCKER. Since Rev. RUCKER
was a Baptist minister I believe that most of that generation followed that
religion and left the Lutheran Church of the grandparents. I have traced
these SNYDER-STIGLER descendants and their migrations down through several
generations. Mine (YAGER-SNYDER) followed Malevia's YAGER and WILHOIT kin
and went to Kentucky and were there through the Civil War BUT many other of
the siblings settled in Missouri in the years prior to that war. Only one
of the SNYDER-FRAY daughters and one SNYDER-PEYTON daughter stayed in VA.
In MO they went to the Boone's Lick-Arrow Rock-Blackwater area in Saline,
Cooper and Howard Counties in the early 1800's. This is an historic area,
well preserved, where the Santa Fe Trail began. At the time that they
settled there it was booming because of the westward movement and also
producing huge amounts of food that was shipped back south and east. It
seems that slave-owners in other states imported food for their slaves
since the land for growing cotton was considered too valuable to grow food.
I read this interesting tidbit on the walls of the state park in Arrow Rock
last summer. I do have much more on these kinfolk and their burials for
anyone who is interested.

The name STIGLER is sometimes STICKLER or STIGLAR. Also James' wife Martha
is a Revolutionary War Patriot. I have James', Martha's and Samuel's wills
as well as citations of several other STIGLER documents. Let me know if you
want these and what you might have that I do not.
Which of the James STIGLER children is your line?. I live in the Kansas
City Metro area...Overland Park, KS.
