The translation of the Protestant church history of the Bergsite of the
Volga has been completed. The introduction from the German text for the
Moscow Consistory, which the Volga colonies belonged to, has also been
translated. The introduction gives a broader understanding of the Moscow
Consistory in 1909 and will be sent to all those that subscribed to the
Bergseite translation along with the Bergseite translation.
One of the surprises to me was the number of German Protestant parishioners
in the city of Saratov. The city of Saratov had a Protestant church building
as early as 1793. The Saratov Archive has a census of the Lutherans, but the
dates are not given on my source, and there are the sexton's record for the
German cemetery in Saratov (the sexton frquently had gravediggers duties
among his responsibilities). Again, no dates in my source. In the parish for
the city of Samara there were 900 Germans in the Protestant parish in 1904,
and Samara data is more available. I have seen Saratov given as the place of
origin in the 1920 US census for some VGs in Michigan's Thumb, and also saw
Saratov and Samara given as the place of origin on Declarations of Intent to
become a US citizen, but thought it loosely meant the provinces. It appears
the reference was to the city, not the province.
