Interesting Alejandro that it is called a KALACH
because KULICH is Russian for a special Easter Bread/Cake.
It's tall, baked in a tin, quiet dry/hard and long lasting...
similar to an Italina Panetone, but not so light and airy.

erry:

Here in Argentina, among Volga Germans, you still could see some adobe ovens (mostly on little towns or villages), also other immigrants used it.
In Aldea San Antonio (or San Antonio village) in Gualeguaychú zone, Entre Ríos province, you could see even a monument to the "oma" Kindsvater who baked the firsts russian breads (or kalach in dialect), at that time (1889) where no builded ovens, so she dig like a hole in the banks of the river and baked the bread there.
The bread or even turkeys, pigs and other stuff you could bake in a adobe oven, takes a special taste...very tasty.
It's still being a costume on the farms here usually.

I couldn't find a good picture of it, but If I find it, I'll send it to you or send a link.

Kind regards from Argentina

Asunto: [GV] adobe/brick ovens

Merry Christmas everyone!

My father always raved about his mother's crusty bread and he talked about his father constructing an outdoor oven for his mother. I have checked out many sites and read many articles on how to build one but I was wondering if the German ovens were shaped any differently. Were they unique in any way? Does anyone have a photo of an old brick oven? Wasn't there just, one central, communal oven in the Russian villages?
Thank you.
On my mind, my Naab - Berger ancestors this Chrismas and missing my wonderful father, Andy Knob, who died at 94, in February.
