Thanks to those who have given their good wishes. And I am happy Kevin and Brent have divided the task of translating the 1850 and 1857 censuses.
Here is how to do a search on the LDS website. Go to the Family History Center website, go to the Library dropdown menu near the right hand side, and select Library Catalog. I like to use the Keyword Search button on the next screen; click that button and you have a field to enter your keyword on the next screen.
Provincial names have worked well for me; village names really do not work well. You can add the district name if you know it. The Russian word for military is something like "Военные." If you enter that, 218 entries come up. Not all are GR, but if you have ancestors from Estonia or Livonia or Sweden, you might hit the jackpot: there are films of records from the 1500s and 1600s for regions in what are now the Baltic States, Finland and Sweden.
I became a believer in the LDS archives when I went to Budapest. The National Archives had a copy of my maternal great-grandfather's parish register that had been filmed by LDS in 1964 - just 8 years after the uprising against the Russians.
Most of the census and conscript films I have seen were copied in 2002 and 2003.

I sincerely hope you do. You have demonstrated to me that you are the kind
of Board member that is needed because you are able to think outside of the
box.
I have been asked several times, but have been forced to declined because of
health concerns for my husband and myself.
A number of us associated with the village of Norka combined our resources
and obtained the 1834 and 1857 census for our village when AHSGR failed to do
so. If we had not done so, these documents would still be unavailable. The
same is true for many other villages.
I have found great hope in the Center for Volga German Studies at Concordia
University in Portland, OR, and have been supporting their activities. I see
this as the hope for attracting the younger generation. I hope others will
support this activity as well. If you have not done so, please visit:

I decided it was time to share the information that I have collected.
Therefore, I recently uploaded my Family Trees onto RootsWeb. This is a free
site. You don't have to be a member to look at my trees.
Go to:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
Go to "Search Engines and Databases" on the left side of the page.
Select "
WorldConnect Project."
Go to "find a database by keyword." Enter "Norka" and
click on "GO."
Four trees will come up. The third and fourth trees are mine. One is
called "Norka and others." Click on the name of my Database called
"rsvolga."
>From there you can go exploring.
There are over 6,900 names in the tree. All of them are connected to me in
some way. Many are ancestors, inhabitants, or descendants of Norka, but my
Swedish relatives, the Kahres and the Cordes family can also be found.
My other file is called Norka Ancestors, Inhabitants & Descendants which is
a
resource file put together from many sources. It contains over 27,500
names. Be sure to look at both files. There is some unique information in
each
file.
With so many entries, I am sure there may be some errors, although I have
tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find an error or have additional
information, please send me an e-mail message. I hope you will let me know
what you think of my two files and if you find them useful.
One of these days I plan to merge these two files, but that is a BIG task.
There is some duplication, but also some unique information in each of the
files. Be sure to check back from time to time. I cannot make corrections or
additions directly to my RootsWeb files. Such changes must be make in my
genealogy program and then uploaded to RootsWeb. I will be uploading my
revised
file from time to time. Watch for new dates on these files which will
indicate that I have made changes.

Understand the reward of the souls:? Before a soul comes into a body, it is but
a
tiny dot, though attached to the root as a branch to a tree.? This dot is
called
?the root of the soul and its world.?? Had it not entered this world in a body,
it
would have had only its own world, meaning its own share of the root.

Words take on strange twists and are unfortunately often misinterpreted and
falsehoods are spread to take on a life of their own. Concerning the recent
posting "Last year I drove the 100 miles to get one (a teapot was being
discussed) and was told that they were getting rid of everything Russian."
to which some persons on this mail list are now assuming AHSGR is getting
rid of everything Russian. That is a misunderstanding and misrepresentation
of what was said during the Russian teapot discussion.
It is true the Russian china previously available in the Gift Shop is being
discontinued. Price and availability make it almost impossible to continue
it as an offering in the Gift Shop. BUT the Society is certainly not
"...getting rid of everything Russian..."
Concerning "A couple of years ago my brother, who lives in Missouri,
stopped
to see things as I had just showed him my research. He was told they had
nothing on the Walker family from Frank." I happen to know there is
information about the Walker family from Frank in the AHSGR library. It
might not answer the questions for a particular researcher but information
is available in the surname database (see the gedlist at
http://www.ahsgr.org/gedlist/Waldo-Wann.htm). There is also a Walker surname
chart for the village Frank in the library (see for yourself by searching
the SOAR surname chart database
http://www.ahsgrsoar.org/search/SearchSoar.aspx?New=true using Walker and
Frank as the keywords for the search). A Walker Family History is in the
library (Davick, Carol Walker. Walker-Schlecht Ancestry, 1683 Through 1983:
Loves, Lives, Legacies. CS 71 .W345 1984x) plus other family histories
prepared by persons named Walker (Walker, Immanuel. Farma: eine wahre
Lebensgeschichte. DK 673.5 .G3 W34 1990 And Walker, Judith J. (Judith Jean
Beglau). Memories: The Gums Family Heritage. CS 71 .G857 1983x And Walker,
Judith J. Roots and Branches: The Beglau Family Heritage. CS 71 .B435
1989x). Somehow there was a very large communication gap between all the
persons involved in that visit, or the brother was looking for a particular
Walker person and there was nothing about that specific person in the
library. Without knowing what was asked for and when this occurred I can
only tell you - the statement is not correct that nothing about the Walker
surname is in the library.
Concerning "Using a Pleve chart to verify just one family, (parents &
children) I was told that I couldn't copy the information with my pencil on
my paper." That is not the policy of the AHSGR library for research. There
have been charts, in the past, that had been accepted for storage with the
constraint imposed by the chart owner (not AHSGR) that information could not
be copied from the chart. That problem has been corrected and such a
constraint no longer exists when using the surname charts in the library.
Again, without knowing when this happened I can only tell you - the
statement is not true.
Concerning "My brother was also interested in purchasing a metal plaque
for
our grandparents. The cost didn't really concern him as it is a money
making
project for the archives. But he was told he had to be a member." I happen
to know this is also not true. Anyone, including non-members, may purchase a
plaque for their GR ancestors. Again, without knowing when this happened I
can only tell you - the statement is not true and the policy has not changed
in the last eight years that I know of.
I am curious when the visit occurred mentioned in "On my last visit I did
tell the person who runs the place (sorry I don't remember her title) that
they were going to price themselves right out of business.".
I invite Colleen to send a private message to me with
some details about that visit, when it occurred, plus information about when
the other problems described in her message occurred.
What I believe is sad is how misinformation such as this is easily spread
and obtains a life of its own with embellishments. If there are others in
Hastings NE that now believe the service described by Colleen is what they
can expect from a visit to the AHSGR library, I wish there was a method I
could explain to all of them this is not the case.
Thank you for reading to the end of this but I felt it necessary to set the
record straight. If the events described in Colleen's message occurred 10
years ago, I can't respond to that except to say such statements are not
correct now.
