YAKIMA - Mary M. Steinmetz was born Maria Magdalena Besel, daughter of John Fredrick and Katherina (Becker) Besel on June 22, 1912 in Farmer, WA. The family also lived in Waterville, Spokane, Hardin MT., before settling in the Yakima Valley. On June 28, 1928 Mary was untied in marriage with Henry Steinmetz in billings, MT. After moving to WA they engaged in farming dairy cattle and enjoyed picking fruit for local orchardists. Although they had no children of their own they spent much time with nieces & nephews over the years treating them as their own. Henry passed away on September 8, 1895. Mary's hands were seldom idele as she braided rag rugs, corcheted, embroidered, made quilts & much more. She served as financial secretary for her church for many years, the Toppenish Evangelical.

Mary was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Fred, Jacob, Leo, samuel, John Jr., Alex, Samuel II, Edward Harold and Henry Besel; three sisters Martha Jones, Matilda Waterhouse and Lydia Henry. She is survived by three sisters Esther (Merle) Betts of Snohomish, Anna(Frank) Porter and Helen Besel of Ephrata; and numerous nieces and nephews. In Frebruary of 2004 Mary moved Garden Village Care Facility in Yakima where she was cared for until her passage to Heavon September 8, 2008 and the 23rd anniversary of her husband's home-going. The family wishes to thank the staff of Garden Village for their loving care, Funeral services will be held on Friday September 12th, 2008 at 11 am at Colonial Funeral Home. Internment will follow at the Zillah City Cemetery.
