Subject: strange email from Russia / based Caucasus

Sally,

Ditto - although I don't consider it strange.

Same woman. In my case she wanted to get in touch with the
Friebus & Tittel/Tuttle/Dietel families in SA.

She was completely honest with me. Said that she is
researching on behalf of a little old lady in
South Russia, North Caucasus area, and she has a full tree for
this little old lady, but missing the South African branch.

She says that the spends a lot of time in the North
Caucasian archives.

Now all this is very plausible, and no cause for concern.

She wanted me to track them down for her, which I tried to
do, but, like her, 2 e-mails bounced and 3 didn't reply.
I sent her addresses out of the phone book with tel. numbers.

Then she became very PUSHY, demanding that I find those
missing people, because she has only me on whom she can
really, etc....to find the missing links.

I was put off by her Pushy and Domineering manner,
basically demanding me to go out and find her missing
people. I wrote to say that I have done for her as much
as I can, short of knowing in which towns to find the
people whose e-mails bounce.

I have nothing against professional (fee-based) researchers
contacting me - they do all the time - and it is their
profesional job, most are history graduates, and it is their
honourale profession. Often we EXCHANGE info. I help them,
they help me. They go the archives for me and send
photocopies, I do the same for them.

So, Sally, she might actually have what YOU want.
Anyhow, she is based in the North Caucasus and frequents
the local archives there - which is of value to people on
this list who need contacts there.

Regards,

Vera Beljakova-Miller

Subject: [GV] strange email from Russia

A few days ago I received a friendly-sounding email from
a woman who lives in Russia. She said she was researching
Germans from Russia too (she found my email from a posting
I made on the Usingen, Germany guest book -- Usingen being
the town where my probable Zitzer ancestor came from).

Her emails quickly became full of questions about my
research, did I have a "full" family tree? But she didn't
give information about herself. And she told me there
are lots of Zitzers in Russia and they are all my relatives!

I started getting suspicious and looked up her email address
on the internet. One of her postings was in the Usingen guest
book and it sounds like she does research for a fee. I suspect
she would have "offered" to give me a list of the Zitzers in
Russia for a fee. But in my last email I said they would
be very DISTANT relatives. I think she understood I wasn't
interested because she has not replied since then.

I just wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences.
And I wanted to alert people to what can happen on the
internet. The woman's name is Marina Plijewa, and her
email is . She seems quite fluent in
English and German.
