GRESHAM, Ore. - Henry "Sonny" Henkel, Jr., died at his home with his family close to him, Oct. 26, 2005. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Ascension Lutheran Church at 181st in Gresham.
Donations may be made to the Mt. Hood Hospice.
Sonny was born June 6, 1931, in Scottsbluff to Henry and Mary (Foltz) Henkel, He was married to Mildred Knaub Dec. 16, 1951, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff. He farmed for three years in Scotts Bluff County. His sons, Jerry Henkel and Richard (Dick) Henkel were born in Scottsbluff. The family moved to Portland, Ore., in February 1955. He worked for Consolidated Freightways, Portland Bottling Company and Columbia Distributing as Route Salesman and Supervisor, before he retired in 1986. He did small engine repair and home repair until 1996.
He was a member of the Portland Bowling Association since 1957. An avid bowler, fisherman, bird hunter and sports fan, he was also a blood donor to the Red Cross and was a member of the Gallon club. He attended church at Ascension Lutheran Church in Gresham.
His family and friends were his joy in life.
Survivors include his sons, Jerry Henkel and Richard (Dick) Henkel; brothers, Bob Henkel and Marvin Henkel, both of Scottsbluff; sister, Betty Schwartzkopf of Mitchell; daughters-in-law, Sue Henkel and Elizabeth Henkel; grandchildren Sayra and Laura Henkel of Portland, Ore.; six step-grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother Henry Henkel, Sr., and Mary
(Foltz) Henkel.
