Subject: [GV] Numbers of Late Resettlers drop sharply
Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 18:05:51 -0700

The following came from the Information Service for German Russian News
Services and was forwarded to me by Michael Miller. - Translation - Horst W.
Gutsche - October 10, 2002

In 2002 the numbers of late resettlers dropped sharply
Only about 1/5 of the immigrant group is of German origin

Berlin (ID0 - In the first eight months of this year about 56,500 late
resettlers arrived in Germany. The numbers dropped by 10,000 compared to
the same time period in the previous year. The same situation now exists
with applications for resettlement. Up to the end of August 2002, about
44,200 (2001 about 54,500) applications were filed. The numbers of people
of German origin has also declined among those who have arrived. In August
about 22 % were of German origin; the other 78 % consisted of the non-German
family members of the applicants.

The person responsible for resettlers in the federal government, Jochen
Welt, expects that there will be 90,000 late resettlers in all of 2002 (2001
there were about 98,500). When the new immigration law comes into effect at
the beginning of 2003, then even fewer Russian Germans should be making the
decision to resettle. The acceptance will depend on the German language
examination which the family members who accompany the person of German
origin must also pass. However, "Welt" is convinced that those who resettle
with satisfactory language skills will be able to be integrated more easily
in the Federal Republic and will be accepted by the native populace more
readily than those who do not speak German.
