I also am not pleased with the 300% increase in SS-5 fees, but quite frankly
there is nothing I can do about it except continue to bitch.
If the SSA had its way they would not release any of this info to genealogists.
It was The Freedom of Information Act that forced them to do so. The increase
in fees will cutback on these requests significantly.

At some point in time, probably another decade or so, the SSA will turn over
all the old SS-5s to the National Archives where researchers will be able to
examine them.
One day the LDS FHL will probably acquire micofilms of these records.
