I also find it impossible to get to an LDS FHC. But, in answer to the
question, the line is drawn at the limit at which you are willing to give
something back to the list and its members. For example, I have a genealogy
E-pal (a Texan) now living in Thailand. Now, there's a guy who *can't* use the
American FHC library facilities if ever there was one. But he collects and
gives back more than he receives from the various E-lists of which he is a
member. He's like a shaman or something, a living tribal memory bank. Should
he be banned, shunned, or bad-mouthed because it's not easy for him to get to a
Massachusetts library (his area of study) from Thailand? One way he gives back
to us is by sponsoring and moderating a couple of E-lists, in addition to
sharing what he has.
Each of us does have some odd resource, even if small. The difference is
whether or not you share what you have in return for begging what you cannot
obtain on your own.
It's all an attitude thing. Give and ye shall receive. Hog, and to heck
with ye.
