: Recently ran across a biography of an ancestor in a county historical
: book. It stated my ancestor "practiced the art of the puddler since
: its infancy." Any idea what that was?

Probably iron puddling as suggested by others, but clay puddling was a
procedure used to make waterproof ponds and ditches - clay was "puddled"
together into an impermeable layer at the bottom of where you might want
to construct a pond. It was also used for infilling in stone walled
houses to prevent wind and water ingress - as is so often the case, where
your ancestor was working might give a clue as to waht he was working at!
