"I have a great grandmother named Anastasia
McCarthy who lived in Cork Ireland in the mid-1800s.
Is/was Anastasia a common name in Ireland?"
It was certainly a well-used name in the Cork/Kerry
region in the 1800s, as indicated in various records.
I believe there is a discussion of this from about a
year ago, which could be located in the newsgroup's
archives. I do Co. Clare research mainly and have
not seen the name used there in the 1800s like it
was in that area just south/southwest.
BTW, I have just found out that Hyacinth was used
for males. I do have a Hyacinth Donnellan in the
late 1700s in Clare, from the records in the Deed
Office, Dublin, and now it makes more sense that
this is a reference to a man holding land. The
Donnellans were originally a Galway sept and I will
keep my eyes peeled for more Hyacinths there, since
I do not see Clare families using that name in the 1800s.
