Now hear this!!!
My E-mail sent Wednesday, 30 June 1999 6:39 To Cork City Library
Dear Sir or Madame
Catherine LONG was sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South
Wales at City Cork Spring Assizes 1822. The offence was larceny from a
shop. She was recorded as being born Woolwich (presumably England)
circa 1805 other convict records suggest a birth 1803. She was a
Catholic and her father was John LONG.
Does your library have holdings of:
Proceedings of the Spring Assizes 1822?
or
Newspaper reports of the results of the Spring Assizes.
I would appreciate your advice on the above.
I have been researching the possibility that Catherine LONG was the
daughter of Irish parents and that her father John LONG was serving in
the English Army which would allow a birth at Woolwich and could have
been stationed back in Cork where Catherine was arrested.
I have extensive data on Catherine LONG from 1823 through until her
death in
1871 at Dandry near Coonabarabran NSW Australia. Dandry was a station
of some 16,000 acres with some 600 cattle which Catherine owned at the
time of her death and had done so since the death of her second
husband
William CARLO(W) in 1858.
Thanking you
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Warnock,
Cork City Library does not hold the
proceedings of the Spring Assizes for 1822.
The report on the assizes in the 'Freeman's Journal' of 23 Apr 1822
contained just one reference to
Catherine Long. The reference reads 'Catherine Long for stealing a
piece of linen from Henry Morrogh...To be all transported for seven
years'.
Yours sincerely,
