Like you I found my Grandfather as a child in an Orphan Asylum, It was the "British Orphan Asylum" at Slough in 1905 aged about 9 years. I have managed to do some research and hope that some of it may be relevant and helpful to you. Though the British Orphan Asylum was a seperate organisation it merged with the London Orphan Asylum at Watford in 1921, and the boys (96) were transferred to Watford. Subsequently the Orphan Asylum moved to Cobham in Surrey, and became known as Reeds School, where it remains today.

I made contact with the school at:- Sandy Lane, Cobham, Surrey, KT11 2ES. Web site :-http://web.ukonline.co.uk/reedsschool They were very helpful and I received a copy of a letter from one of their old boys who has an interest in the history of the school, in which he alluded that records would be with the LOS. additionally that it would be worth trying the Surrey Records Office and stated, ' Reports on the RBOS (and I would assume LOS) of the Charity Organisation Society, (now the family Welfare Association) will be at the London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, EC1R 0HB. Such records cannot be consulted without authorisation from the FWA. A visit to the Charity Commission in the Haymarket might be worthwhile.'

Unfortunately I have not had the time to follow this up, but in addition to hoping that this may be of use to you I would be interested in your outcomes.
