Some thoughts:
1. I don't think there's a Genbox "community," just a lot of individual
Genbox users, and you probably can't force them all to use the same form
and method of communication.
2. People have varying skills at navigating the Web. Those who purchased
Genbox obviously know about the Genbox website, but may not know about
Rootsweb. Or if they know about Rootsweb, they may know only about
WorldConnect or the SSDI database. They may not have figured out there
are software mailing lists at Rootsweb.
3. Some (many?) people may prefer a message board to a mailing list, not
wanting all that email coming to their inbox. They may have only an
occasional question and not a long-term interest in Genbox issues, or
may not be interested in the issues raised by others. For them, a
message board/forum would seem to be more appropriate.
4. Rootsweb also has message boards:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software/mb.ashx
Rootsweb message boards can be configured so that the messages are also
sent to the paired mailing list. That way mailing list members can
readily see message board posts without having to visit the message
board itself. Currently there is no RW message board for GB, but one
could be set up.
FWIW,
Kathy
