Alan, Wim,
Yes, I wouldn't rely on google wave for anything important at this stage. It's not particularly stable and I imagine they'll be doing a lot more on privacy and control of waves. At the moment, anyone in a private wave can add anyone else to it. You would need to trust the other people. I don't think the person who created the wave has any special rights. (Says me with all of three days experience in it!) Definately more of a toy right now!
I don't know what You Send It is like, but I've been playing with Dropbox lately and that has a lot of potential for collaboration and sharing big files. It lets you each synchronise with the same online folder, is free, and claims to be secure. It all works automatically once installed. I've been using it to keep my Genbox database in sync between my desktop and laptop for the past few weeks. It's working well for me. I don't know how it would go with big files (how big is big?).
Back to Wave - I'm not really sure exactly what we might use it for but there's plenty of potential. eg. working together on more Genbox tutorials. It also has the ability to include a robot translator in the wave so we could each speak in our own language - but I would wonder how good the translations are.

It's also in a sort of "pre-beta" (alpha) state so a lot might change or other functionality might get added in the future. At the moment, the functionality is "text oriented". People working on the same text document. For instance a Family Newsletter.
