Can someone explain how to use the URL option for media?

I generally save images to a file on my HD for direct line individuals. For
non direct line individuals, I have been recording the URL within the source
notes, for quick access to cut-and-paste into a web browser.

I assume that I need to save the URL somewhere, but where and how do you do
that?
