Hello Cheri, Wim, David
Thanks for your suggestions about the event Class.
My Birth event is in the Birth Class; a logical place as well as the
default.
My Birth Registration is also in the Birth Class as it should, in
theory, happen within three months of the birth.
My baptism event is in the Child/Youth Class; again the default.
If, as suggested by David, I delete the birth registration event, there
is no change to the ordering until I move away from the person. On
returning to him, the order is correct. When I add the Birth
registration event the date ordering is once again incorrect.
I have just been testing by entering a new person and have found another
bug which may be related. If I enter a "New" person from the toolbar and
add his name on the Summary page, I then have a problem entering his
birth event. Clicking on the (green) Birth event moves to the Event
screen with 'Birth' in the Event box. So far, so good.
If I now enter a date and press Enter, the cursor moves to the Place box
but the box on the right side of the page continues to say New. No event
number is generated and returning to the Summary page shows no date has
been entered for the Birth event.
Entering the Baptism or Birth Registration event first works properly.
If I enter a Baptism or Birth Reg event first and then enter the Birth
event, the birth date is entered correctly.
As a further test, I entered the following information for a new person
in the following order:-
Bapt 2 Jan 1900
Birth 1 Jan 1900
Birth Reg 3 Jan 1900
and the summary page showed the events sorted correctly.
Changing the date of birth to just 1900 resulted in the sorted order
being:-
Baptism 2 Jan 1900
Birth 1900
Birth Reg 3 Jan 1900
(sigh!!)
Deleting the Birth Reg event changed the sort order after I had moved
away from the person and then back to him. Adding the Birth Reg back
again resulted in the incorrect sort order.
All of this suggests the cause of the problem is my Birth Registration
event but for the fact that there are many other individuals for whom
the sorting works as it should.
Aha!!! If I change the Birth Reg event to the Child/Youth Class, the
above dates sort correctly! Changing it back to the Birth Class, the
sort is incorrect. One of the examples quoted in previous emails now
sorts correctly if Birth Reg is in the Child/Youth Class, however
another one doesn't. (Arrgh!!)
What is particularly annoying is that the vast majority of cases where I
have Birth, Baptism and Birth Registration events, there is no problem
with the date sorting.
Why does the Birth Reg Class have this effect though? From the Help file
"The event class groupings are roughly chronological. The class
assignments are used to order events when event date information is
missing." In my examples, the event date information is supplied.
Perhaps something for Bill to look at?
I'm still confused about the ordering of dates. For me 1900 should come
before January 1900 which should come before 1 January 1900. What about
"circa" or "about"?
I should point out that the bug with entering the birth date first still
remains, despite the Birth Reg Class. Another one for Bill?
Still confused..
Andrew
