Kathy,
I think you have done a bang-up job of analyzing some of the problems in
this area in a very eloquent manner. I regret not having been available the
last few days to participate in this discussion.
Probably my greatest frustration in trying to use the Research
Targets/Searches was getting information OUT, not in. An example I remember
was making a group of birth or marriage events, in a particular locale,
Research Targets. Each Event had two potential places to look for a record,
the City Hall and the State Archives. So I created two searches for each
Target Event and attached them to the appropriate repositories. The problem
I was encountering was in trying to generate a report that listed searches
by repository. As I recall, unless the Research Target had ALL of its
searches OR the FIRST search at the filtered repository, it would not show
up in the report, which was Research Targets, not searches. I attributed
this to the fact that
Searches are ONLY treated as sub-records of Targets, not a record group of
their own.
I thought that it would be necessary to provide a Searches View and Searches
Report to resolve this issue, so I'm glad that so many have experienced an
interest in improving this corner of Genbox, including Bill! <g>

GREAT!

But some Research Targets are contained in Projects. So how does one (in
3.2.4) get a list of research targets and their subordinate searches
contained in a given project? Through the Projects report, the Research
Targets report, or neither?

Well, I thought I had pretty much managed to work things out for my needs
with respect to the Research Target report; it was the Project report that
was the issue. But Murray, Paul, and Don seemed to be having problems with
the former. I'm not entirely done playing around with the research target
report, but while exploring it, I did come across a few stumbling blocks or
inconveniences:
1. The ability to get a list of all the targets and searches associated
with a given project (mentioned above)
2. The automatic name created for an event, e.g.:
Thomas C. MALEY (by 1838 - ): Census 1 Jun 1900 Abilene, Dickinson County,
Kansas "age 60, married for 2 years, a dealer of nursery stock, born in
October, 1839 in Canada"
This makes it unwieldy to use an event main item or sub-item in a report,
and necessitated that I create a shorter name for the event in the Target
Description field, e.g.:
MALEY, Thomas C: Census 1 Jun 1900
3. The ability to link a search to a citation would be nice. So far, most
of my tasks (searches) involve rechecking data. I've been cutting and
pasting citations into the Search Description, and that works, but it would
be easier not to have to do that.
4. The ability to sort searches, not just targets. (I think Paul mentioned
this, too.) Sometimes a target will have multiple searches in different
locations or repositories. An example of the result of a sort by
repository:
Repository Event Source Task
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
EPL Spike, J D: Death Find Isaac Spike home
WHS 4 May 1935 (where J D died)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
BVR Lenerz, John: Death Death Cert. Get death cert. no.
WHS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHS Lenerz, Bill: Wis. State Determine yr. of death
Death 16 Jan 1970? Jrnl. (1970 vs. 1971)
5. #4, combined with the ability to do hierarchical sorting, would result
in:
Edgerton
EPL
Madison
BVR
WHS
Here are two similar examples borrowed from Don:
FHL Films
Film Number
Task 1
Task 2...
Morgan County (Ohio) Courthouse
Land records
Task 1
Task 2...
Probate records
Task 1...
But, again, I've managed to create some reports that will work for me. See
Murray's, Paul's, and Don's posts for more of what people are looking for.
Murray started this whole thread . . . Where are you, Murray?
Thanks for listening,
Kathy
