Murray - Ah, but you *can* add a picture to a place. I have maps attached
to some of my counties and a couple of pictures of ancestral castles in
England. CheriC

Hi Cheri
That is a good approach - I like it. I hadn't realised that a researcher
can be independent of the main database.
It still would be nice to be able to view contacts / do reports etc
though! I can see a number of applications - generating address books,
listing contacts in a place I am researching or visiting, finding all
the misplaced data imported from Legacy etc.
BTW - I would also like to be able to add a picture to a Place, I
collect photographs of churches, houses etc, maps and other
"place-centric" pictures, and while I can attach them to an event, it
would be better to attach them to the Place. This would connect the
picture with all individuals with that Local Site or Place. I was
surprised to find this feature missing when I went to use it.

I had a contact address to save somewhere and so I thought this was a
good time to understand how Genbox Contacts work. The 3 Contact types
(Places, Individuals and Researchers) seem to be an additional layer on
top of the Place, I wonder if they are in the same data structure? The
address info in a Local Site is different as it is treated as an
alternative Local Site.

Murray - This is how I do it: For individuals, I add them as
Researchers if, indeed, that is what they are and they are people who
whom I have a dialog. If there are merely someone who is in my database
and for whom I have an address and with whom I am not actively
exchanging information, I would add their address under Contacts on the
Individuals view. To me, this is more like an "address book" versus a
list of "researchers" or "repositories." For places such as libraries,
repositories, etc., I use the Place and add the information to the
Contact tab. I add their hours of operation, driving directions, etc.
under the Notes.

Subject: RE: [GENBOX] Contacts
Sorry, I meant that I was missing the way to list the contacts, not
looking for missing contacts :>).
I would like to be able to look at/add to/report on/delete/...., Contact
records the same way I can do these things with Individuals / Sources
etc. I assume that they are kept in a separate data structure and so
this should be quite easy.
It may be that my thinking is distorted by Legacy, where you seen to
need to use the contacts to add the equivalent of Local Sites - and so I
now have contacts for "interesting places" such as gravestones etc.
Genbox handles places and contacts much better and I see Contacts being
the means to keep true contact details, mainly for someone you are
communicating with. This could be a person in the database or a contact
who may not be a family member - eg an archive etc. It seems to make
sense to be able to work on contacts independently of the records they
are attached to, for example, list all of the contacts in an area that
you may be visiting or researching, these may be both Individual and
Place contacts.
What is the model for contacts stored in Genbox? I see that a Local Site
can have an address, is there any difference between this and a Contact
address? I assume that this is not the case as Places can also have
contacts, but are Place Contacts different from Individual Contacts?

Murray,
How would you define a missing contact?
If you're looking for individuals withour a contact defined: Tools >
Search; on the "contact" tab, enter "0" in the "Total #" field, then hit
"Search".

It would seem to be nice to have a Contacts option under View and
Reports. Is there a way of seeing / reporting on contacts that I am
missing?
