To be consistant from the begining in GB I intend to use the place level
record as follows;

1 Local Site
- Street address
2 Suburb/Town
3 City/District/Region
4 County/Parish
5 Province/State
6 National Area.

Is this ok?

David, as long as you're consistent, I don't see a problem with doing it
this way.

When I fix up all my errors I will have numerous records of the same
address. How do I merge them?.
----------------------------------------------

Simple: In the Places View, with one of the records displayed, go to
Menu>Data>Merge Places. A Pic Dialog will appear. Locate the record you want
to Merge into the currently selected record, then click Select. Every time
you Merge one Place into another, you will wind up with a separate Name
record for the Place, even if the Names and Higher Places are identical. The
previous links to each Name Variation remain separate, unless you merger the
NAMES together in the Places View. More below.

=============================================
I also have instances of a street address i.e. 123 Graveney Road, being in
different places at different times. With the different
certificates/censuses I have, it started in Streatham - moved to Tooting -
and finished up in Upper Tooting. (goodness knows where it is now!) For each
event I have shown the address as it was recorded/kept at the time. However
in the place record, how do I show them all as being the same place ?

This is where you are going to be really glad you are working with Genbox.
It may take a few times to get the hang of it, but Genbox is quite powerful
in this area. The fact that you have entered the different address locations
as they appeared in the record is a very good thing. All you need to do is
merger the Place records as discussed above, but don't merger the NAMES.

First of all, in the process of entering these three different localities
for 123 Graveney Road, did you wind up with three DIFFERENT RECORDS (IDs)
for a Local Site named "123 Graveney Road" or do you have ONE record for
"123 Graveney Road" that has three Name Variations (Names Tab on Places
View)? The second case is the desired result. If you have the first case,
navigate to the record for "123 Graveney Road" that has Upper Tooting as its
Higher Place. With that selected, go to Menu>Data>Merge Places, find one of
the other occurrences and merge it. Repeat this process to merge the
remaining record.

Now you want to work on the Names Tab of the Places View. It should look
something like this with the first entry selected:

Names (Standard First) | Date Range |S|
----------------------------------------
123 Graveney Road
123 Graveney Road
123 Graveney Road

Higher levels: Upper Tooting, .....

If you select the other Name Variations, the Higher levels field will change
to reflect the other locations. You now have three different names for one
place, and the Events that the different names were linked to remain the
same. You can even switch to the Links Tab and filter the links for each
variation of the name.

This may not apply in your case, but say that the spelling of the road
changed over time, or the road became an avenue. You can reflect that in the
appropriate variation about, then using the fields at the bottom of the
Names Tab when other than the first name (Primary) is selected will allow
you to generate such things as "123 Graveney Road (now 123 Graveney Avenue)
on output.

If you want your output to read, "123 Graveney Road, Streatham (now Upper
Tooting)", that's another post AFTER you get the above setup complete. <g>
