Wim (and Bill),

There seem to be some problems with the way templates are parsed.

A default report gives me this:

Zelie Vuijlsteke was born on 28 June 1999 in Gent. Witnesses: Philippe
Vuijlsteke, peter; Sofie Pattyn, meter; Henk Loobuyck, gynecologist.
Louis Vuijlsteke was born on 13 April 2001 in Gent. Witnesses: David Pattyn,
peter; Mia Waegenaer, meter; and Henk, gynecologist.
Jan Vuijlsteke was born on 18 February 2004 in Gent. Witnesses: Alec
Vuijlsteke, peter; Katrien De Meyer, meter; and Henk, gynecologist.

The annoying thing is the "Henk" in child 2 & 3.

So I try "[P] was born [D+L]. [WWR+]". Which doesn't change anything to the
"Henk".

Next I try "[P] was born [D+L]. [PP] [WR1] was [W+1] and [PP] [WR2] [W+2].
The [WR3] was [W+3]." That gives me

Zelie Vuijlsteke was born on 28 June 1999 in Gent. Her godfather was
Philippe Vuijlsteke and Zelie's meter Sofie Pattyn. The gynecologist was
Henk Loobuyck. Witnesses: Philippe, peter; Sofie, meter; Henk, gynecologist.

Louis Vuijlsteke was born on 13 April 2001 in Gent. His godfather was David
Pattyn and Louis's meter Mia Waegenaer. The gynecologist was Henk Loobuyck.
Witnesses: David, peter; Marie, meter; and Henk, gynecologist.
Jan Vuijlsteke was born on 18 February 2004 in Gent. His godfather was Alec
Stanislas James Vuijlsteke and Jan's meter Katrien De Meyer. The
gynecologist was Henk Loobuyck. Witnesses: Alec, peter; Katrien, meter; and
Henk, gynecologist.

Apparently, when you use [W+n] Genbox doesn't count that witness as having
been used, so you have to change the template to "[P] was born [D+L]. [PP]
[WR1] was [W+1] and [PP] [WR2] [W+2]. The [WR3] was [W+3].[!WWR]".

*That* makes it impossible to do something like "[P] was born [D+L]. [PP]
[WR1] and [WR2] were [W+1] [W+2]. The [WR3] was [W+3]. <Present at [PP]
birth were [WWR]>".

I keep going around in circles on this, and the more I think about it, the
more I feel that Genbox needs somehting like TMG's roles in events.

Or am I missing something somewhere?

Hi Rich,

Suppose Pete is witnessing the birth of Rich, parents are John and Mary.
Pete can appear in the narrative in four locations, controlled through at
least four different templates:
1) in the Birth-event for Rich. Template: [P] was born [D+L]. [W+] witnessed
the birth
2) in the Childbirth-event for John and under Mary. Template: Birth-event,
click Forward-button: [P] had a [child] [O] [D+L]. Witness was [W+].
3) as witnessed birth-event for Pete. Template: Birth-event, click
Witnesses-tab: WE is: "the birth of [P] [D+L]". The template for (default)
Role: [W+] <witnessed|was the [WR] at> [WE]
4) if in the first two templates a witness-code is missing, then the witness
could be included through the Global Template: "[...]<. Witnesses: [?WWR]>".
In this case you can't use [W+]-code I believe.

If you have created subtypes for a Birth-event, then there will be even more
templates to consider. There is one subtype allready: Stillborn.
If you've created different roles for Witnesses, then check them too.

Gr. Wim
