Cheri,

One thing we need to share with prospective new users. Genbox does
something that no other genealogy program does. It gives us the ability to
create lists of people by whatever parameters we choose and actually
displays the list right there on the screen in plain sight. We don't have
to print it out or mark (tag) all the people (does that cover all past
lives?). All we have to do is click on the name we want in the list and GB
goes directly to their edit screen. This is the most intelligent program on
the market when we are editing data.

| Tim - Welcome to the happy GenBox users list. You will love this program
as
| well as this group of "cyber friends." I've used several programs and
| looked at many, many others and this is truly the best, IMHO. You will
| find, I think, that you are far more productive using this program than
any
| of the others out there and GB offers some very unique and wonderful
| features that *no one* else offers. And you will find that this list is
| extremely friendly.
|
| Like yourself, when I first started genealogy I jumped in with both feet
and
| give little consideration to citing sources. But rather than start from
| scratch, I have kept the same core group of data, moving it from one
program
| to another until I hit GenBox (where I plan on sticking like a cockleburr
on
| velcro socks). Now I simply have a couple of flags that assist my cleanup
| efforts, including one that says "sourced." When a person is fully
sourced,
| this box gets ticked. You might want to consider this route instead of
hand
| entering all of your people from scratch, although that is certainly an
| option as well.
|
| If you need any help, just give a shout via the list and I am sure someone
| will jump in to assist.

|
| Thanks Paul, Wim, Brant and Cheri.
| I am going to take the plunge. I will order Genbox this weekend and get
| started transferring my data. My message was truly my last test. I
apologize
| for the deception, but I wanted to find out what kind of community support
| is out there for Genbox as it is still early in its development cycle.
| During my research I have spoken to over 75 people and less than a handful
| of them adequately sourced their data. I could not reproduce even 2% of
| their data. That is the main reason I began studying and searching for the
| "Best Program".
|
| Thanks Paul and Wim for your specific responses and to Brant for you
candid
| discussion of Legacy. I have not been displeased with Legacy, but I really
| want something that more closely follows the GENTECH Genealogical Data
| Model. Thanks to Cheri (and others) for the examples and discussions that
I
| have already read in the mailing list archives. I have began reading them
| from the start to glean the advancement and examples from others. (Mainly
so
| I don't ask the same question that has already been asked and answered.)
|
| There is a definite following for Genbox and I feel like I can get some
help
| as I go through my initiation phase and make my mistakes. I also feel
| strongly that this community and Bill will continue to improve and adapt
| this program in the near and far distant future.
|
| I am going to manually enter everything I have. I see that Genbox has an
| IMPORT GEDCOM function, but as a newbie to genealogy, I was moving very
fast
| early on and did not adequately source my research. I am sure I will be on
| this site often to both look for answers and ask questions.
| I fortunately concentrated on a single name and only have about 2000
records
| to input. It may take me awhile, but I should find the wholes that I need
to
| research and get the sourcing squared away.
|
| Thanks for the quick response by all. I will continue to read all of the
| messages in the mailing list and on the forum as there appears to be many
| examples already discussed of the data types I am interested in.
