I went with the following scheme, which is similar:

No target defined: gray
Target defined, but no searches: red rings on gray background
Target defined, with open searches: red rings on yellow background
Target defined, all searches completed: black rings on green background

This is implemented in version 3.1.11. Thanks to everyone for their input.
