a question mark (?) as a one-character wildcard
an exclamation mark (!) to mean "not". Thus, "!*" means "not anything"

This gave me the impression that it is meant to work in general searches
as well. Or am I reading too much into it, on my eternal quest for
identifying non-events? <vbg>
