"Special Characters
When entering match conditions, you can enter special characters that
control the search.

For text fields, you can use:
an asterisk (*) as a zero-to-many characters wildcard
a question mark (?) as a one-character wildcard
an exclamation mark (!) to mean "not". Thus, "!*" means "not anything"
(blank field). "

This gave me the impression that it is meant to work in general searches
as well. Or am I reading too much into it, on my eternal quest for
identifying non-events? <vbg>
