I downloaded the demo just yesterday, and this (3.0.25) is the version that
I'm using. I definitely cannot make the columns my desired width.

It is a really useful feature, and I'm so used to having it in my current
program that I didn't realize how important it was to me until I started
playing with GenBox yesterday.
