CheriC

In the example of the "Twp 42, Range 32" for "Grand River Township".

If "Twp 42" is the censusnumber for "Grand River Township", you could enter
that as a namevariant for this place and use this for the census-events.
If "Range 32" is the censusnumber for the County of "Grand River Township",
you could enter that as a namevariant for the countyname. In that case you can
go back to the "Grand River Township", select the namevariant "Twp 42" and
enter "Range 32" as it's higher place. Each namevariant can have it's own
higher place.
If you don't want to split the Twp 42 and Range 32 names and use it as a full
censusname (I think I would prefer this if I had this situation), you could
use the semicolon to keep them tied together.

Ofcourse "Twp 42; Range 32" is hard to understand in reports etc. In that case
there is an option to make it more understandable through using the "On
output"-option for a namevariant. Select "Variant (<wrd> Standard)". In the
Wording-box you could for instance enter "censusnumber for". On output you
would then get the following: "Twp 42; Range 32 (censusnumber for Grand River
Township)".

Hope this helps,

I haven't figured out what kind of effect date ranges for places have in
Genbox. I think Bill will have to shed some light on this.

Wim

[Debbie - That is cool. I have just been making separate places in the
[situations you are describing. Don't think at this juncture I will go back
[and fix the old ones, but this will be handy for new places. Thanks for
[this easy-to-understand explanation. Now have you figured out the
[relationship of how this works with date ranges for places? CheriC

[With the Places, you can have, for one location, a number of different name
[variations associated with it. Here's an example based on my ancestral
[home in Brookport, Massac County, Illinois.
[
[Standard Name:
[Brookport
[(higher place of: Massac County, Illinois)
[
[Name Variants (found on the Names tab in Places):
[Brooklyn
[Pellonia
[
[All three of these names would have the same ID #, as Brooklyn and Pellonia
[are just a name variant of Brookport. Since I still want them to show the
[name of place the event happened in, I would *not* place a check mark in
[the box "Replace with Standard on input". This way, when I have to type
[Pellonia, Massac County, Illinois, it is not replaced with the city name of
[Brookport. I could even go one step further and have the out say:
[Pellonia (now known as Brookport), Massac County, Illinois
[
[Does this make a bit more sense? I know the places are a bit confusing at
[first, but I know you'll get the hang of it.
