One of the problems as I see it with the Place levels is that GB "forces"
some places into structures that *do not* reflect the actual place
structure.
For example, in census work you often see that someone was enumerated in
Grand River Township, Twp. 45, Range 32, Cass Co., Missouri
The entire string "Grand River Township, Twp. 45, Range 32" is the Township
level. Cass Co., Missouri is the next higher level. GB forces "Grand River
Township, Twp. 45, Range 32" into a Local Site. If you try to make it a
Township, the parts "Twp. 45 and Range 32 are forced to the next higher
level which is not correct. In essence the Twp. & Range are "synonyms" for
Grand River Township.
I think I am going to have to adopt Claire's stance and just get over the
fact that GB doesn't handle places in a manner in which I can easily
comprehend. What would be far more useful to me would to be to have one
window with ALL OF THE PLACE FIELDS on it. I would type in whatever I
wanted in the first field, go to a drop down box and select the Type. Go to
the next field, type in the next level, and select type. What GB did behing
the scenes with this information wouldn't matter to me as long as *I* was
making the decisions about what level a field was being applied to. I
suspect that the problem with my example is that there are commas in the
field and GB thinks this means that information following the comma needs to
be pushed to the next level.
