HI Bill!
Ran into a possible bug when I deleted LINKS to citations at the event
level. Sequence of events was:
1. For each individual that had multiple data items pointing to the same
source record (for example, a BIRTH event had source at the event, date,
place and other data items).
2. Clicked on the source button, citation window comes active. Select DELETE
citation; get prompt to delete, say OK. The data item source button is now
blank.
3. After I did all the records concerned, I went to the citation window and
scrolled through each citation.
4. Found that there was a left over citation record for one I deleted using
the above method, but the citation was marked INVALID.
5. I then deleted each INVALID citation from the View Citation window and
then the records were finally deleted.
I guess that the method of deletion I used ONLY deletes the LINK and not the
actual record. If this be true, then maybe this needs clarification in the
HELP file. Additionally, what would happen to the links if I just deleted
the citation directly from the View Citation window? Would any links also be
deleted or would, as I had to in the above example, go through each
individual's record and delete the now invalid event source links?
Thanks
dennis

That is correct, Dennis.

Hi Bill:
So, if I understand you correctly, if a birth certificate verifies the
complete BIRTH event at the highest Surety levels, I should only cite the
source at the event level? This is the tack I've taken and I've reduced the
number of citations by over 1/2.
Thanks,

Hi Dennis,
The limit on the number of records of each type (Individuals, citations,
sources, places, names, events, etc.) is 2 billion. So, effectively there is
no limit.
It is good genealogical practice to cite the BEST source for a fact, rather
than as many as possible. If you have found a primary document that
directly states your fact, and have found no documents that conflict with
your assertion, you can move on to the next fact. You shouldn't include
additional sources that agree but either aren't primary documents or they
only imply the information indirectly. They clutter your report and also
suggest your best source isn't adequate.
On the other hand, if your evidence is weak, it is a good idea to cite
several sources to build up your case. This is assuming each is
independently created--if the additional sources are based on the first,
they don't help.
In Genbox, if you have a source that applies to all information in an event
record, it is better to enter the citation for the entire event, rather than
entering it separately for each piece of the event. This reduces the
processing the program must perform when generating reports.
Entering sources for each part can be the most accurate way to enter source
information. But when Genbox is faced with a citation on the event as a
whole AND one or more citations on the parts, reports will have all of the
citation information merged into a single footnote at the end of the event
sentence. When there are citations only on the parts and not on the whole
event, Genbox will attempt to accurately notate the portions covered by each
source.
