Subject: [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] What happened to the Cowan children ofBrown Co., OH?/1880
Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2008 23:22:02 EDT
HI:
I'm researching the family of WILSON and ELIZA COWEN/COWAN, who migrated
from TENN to Ripley, Union Township, Brown County, OHIO around 1842-43.
I have traced them and their children in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses.
But curiously, in the 1880 Census, several of the Cowen children are missing.
I can't figure out what happened to them.
Wilson died in 1879 (he's listed in the 1880 US Mortality Census)
Eliza died in the early 1850s.
Wilson remarried in the mid-1850s to MIHALY HIGHWARDEN. They had two
children who died in the 1860s.
Daughter Elizabeth died in childbirth in 1870.
Son James married and moved to Cinncinati, where he lived in 1880 with his
wife and two children and his sister BELLE HUGHES, widow of WILLIAM HUGHES of
Brown Co.
Daughter ELIZA married WILLIAM EMMONS.
But FRANKLIN, SALINA, AMANDA, JULIA, MARY are missing from the 1880 Census.
There is a woman named ANNIE TALLEY, nee COWEN, who lists her parents as
Wilson and Eliza in 1871-1873 Freedman's Bank Records. I can't confirm that she
is the daughter of my OH Cowens.
Does anyone know of marriage records for Brown County in the 1870s-1880? I
believe that is the way to find the women. I guess I need to check death
records for the same period to find Franklin.
All research/records suggestions appreciated!
