In answer to Dixie's question. We were really stumped on my greatgreat
grandfather. We only found him in one census and then he dissappeared.
After getting some papers from the civil war pensions we found out he had
gone by his middle name almost all his life. When this was brought to light,
we knew who his parents were[it was the missing link] We didnt even know he
had remarried, when he died or anything about him but thru the papers we
learned alot. Things sounded like they were very poor, his family seemed to
have money though, was he too proud to ask for help or family dispute. One
of the sons was not mentioned in the pension papers and the first wife wasnt
mentioned, we can only conclude they both died between 1870 and 1875.
Great, since this is the time BEFORE death cetificates. We know that some
people only had a wooden cross for a grave marker, so unless we can locate
some information in a newpaper as to their deaths we may never find these
two. Any one know if there was some kind of epidemic during 1870-1880? We
know from family info a lot of our missing relatives died during this time.
We know of one that died and where they are buried but there is no record or
tombstone so EXACT spot isnt known. [My sister almost needed a machete to
get to the cemetery]. My best suggestion is to follow your hunches. You may
have heard something when you were really young that you dont really
remember, that could be your basis of your hunches. Hopefully some of our
problems will give some of the rest of you ideas where to look. WATCH OUT
FOR MIDDLE NAMES
