BIBB COUNTY, AL BOOKS
Bibb Co. is one of the counties that librarians and publishers call a "dead
county" as so few books have been published on them.
THE BLAKES OF BIBB COUNTY, ALABAMA 1819-1988 by Chester R. Johnson
Published in 1988, soft cover, indexed, 175 pages, contains approximately
1500 descendants of John Blake, 1766-1836, the first of his family to come
to the county. This book continues one branch from the book, SOUTHERN
BLAKES, by Kate Blake Daus, pub. 1956. All Blakes in Bibb Co. before 1900
have been placed in his family. His children and grandchildren moved on to
Coosa, Elmore, Lowndes Cos. in AL.; Lafayette, Calhoun, Lowndes Co. and
Attala Cos. in MS; Bienville Par. in LA, and Bell Co., TX. Any one who
has AL Blake ancestors should check out this book
SHULTZ CREEK CHURCH BOOK 1830-1880 transcribed by Chester R. Johnson
The first 50 years of the minutes of the Schultz Creek Baptist Church, Bibb
Co., AL. Published in 1992, 127 pages, indexed, soft cover, transcribed
with original spelling and wording maintained. Bibb Co. was one of the
counties in central AL in which many people stopped for a short time on the
way south and west. Because the Indian held the lands in eastern AL, people
from GA had to go up into TN then turn south through central AL. Any record
these people made is valuable to researchers.
THE WILEY - BOYD LEDGER, Bibb County, Alabama, Before 1823 - 1839, A
Genealogical and Medical Resource, by Chester R. Johnson
Published in 1993, soft cover, 139 pages, all name index. Contains the
index of the charge accounts of James M. C. Wiley, an early merchant of Bibb
Co. The ledger pages of Wiley were cut out by Dr. David R. Boyd, when he
reused the ledger. We are fortunate that Dr. Boyd kept Wiley's index. Dr.
Boyd's ledger has the patient accounts by head of household, date of
service, some of the persons treated are named and family relationship
given, medicine prescribed, charge, method and date of payment (if paid,
many were not).
This book also contains the following excellent appendicies:
"Medicines and Medical Practice in Doctor Boyd's Time" and "Medicines and
Treatments used by Dr. David R. Boyd, 1823-1836". These were prepared by C.
Dan Hooper, R.Ph., and Sandra L. Hooper. Their contributions greatly
enhance the value of this book in historical medical studies. He is the
Chief Pharmacist of the University of North Texas, Health Science Center, at
Fort Worth. She is a medical business consultant in Fort Worth and has an
avid interest in early medicines and medical practices.
Price per book $25.00, which includes postage & handling, NM res. add 6.25% tax
