Passports of Southeastern Pioneers, 1770-1823: Indian, Spanish and Other Land Passports for Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Dorothy Williams Potter, 1982, 1984. Hardback , 6x9, 461 pages, some document reproductions, notes, references, and everyname index. This is a new book in new book condition and one I am still wavering on parting with as I know I could probably not get another hardback of this quality. It has only been reprinted in paperback for some time now, and is out of print more than in print. Per the preface and publisher:

"The Passports and even the geographic area referred to in this book need clarification because it is somewhat unusual to associate passports with travel within what is not the United States, and one has to recall that the southeastern states occupy an area often referred to as the southwest when the passports were written. The majority of the passports collected here authorized passage through Indian or foreign-held territory east of the Mississippi River in the period 1770-1823." The records here have the largest body of data relating to the pioneers that took eight years of research in the records of the War Department, the State Department, the archives of the states, as well as records of the Spanish and the British in West Florida. Probably the most complete source material available for early passports in the southeastern United States. Covers Spanish passports in the Mississippi Valley, Spanish passports in West Florida, War and State Department passports for Indian !
and territorial agencies, State passports (Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia,Tennessee, and Kentucky.). The author has assembled a complete collection of the passports and travel documents issued to individuals and families going to the Mississippi Valley area from Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Here is a huge and invaluable source book that was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Tennessee Historical Commission. Surnames include:
