Adam. xii, 624 pp., ill., ind., rep. 1998 (1970). Although Adam's book was
originally published in 1908 in Great Britain, this is a reprint of the Eighth
Edition, revised by Sir Thomas Innes of Learney. This is a comprehensive work,
treating the history of the ancient clan system and how it evolved, Highland garb
and customs, septs, clan law, tartans, Highland surnames and titles, and much
more. One section recounts the histories of the Highland regiments; another
illustrates and describes the armorial bearings of the clans. Even the war cries
(slogans), banners, music, and language of the Highland clans are dealt with.

AMERICAN DATA FROM THE ABERDEEN JOURNAL, 1748-1783 by David Dobson. 98 pp., 1998.
A brand-new offering from the eminent Mr. Dobson. Items from Scottish sources
referring to colonial America are here extracted from the earliest issues of
Scotland's oldest continuous newspaper. There are references to emigration,
felons, shipping, advertisements for indentured servants, details on Scots
regiments fighting in the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution, news
of colonial events, reports of privateers, etc. Arranged chronologically, but

SHIPS FROM SCOTLAND TO AMERICA, 1628-1828 by David Dobson. 127 pp., 1998. Based
mostly on contemporary newspapers and some government records, since ship lists
did not exist for much of this period. The format is alphabetical by name of ship,
giving name of master, ports of departure and destination, date of sailing or

THE ORIGINAL SCOTS COLONISTS OF EARLY AMERICA: SUPPLEMENT, 1606-1707 by David
Dobson. xiv, 194 pp., 1998. This work adds to Mr. Dobson's earlier book,
"Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783," and also contains
completely new information gleaned from recent research. This volume is
alphabetical by surname, listing all personal information found about each
individual in any of dozens of U.K. and U.S.sources, all cited. Paper. (Item #:

which explains the origins of clans and tartans, then provides illustrations in
both words and pictures. Double-page spreads comprise thumb-nail sketches of the
leading clans, their origins, anecdotes from their histories, and full-color

MONUMENTS AND MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN SCOTLAND, Vol. I by Charles Rogers. xvi,
534 pp., ind., 1997 (1871). In its reprinted edition, entitled Scottish Monuments
and Tombstones. The Rev. Rogers spent 11 years compiling this information. Vol. I
covers about 250 parishes, grouped by county. There is a full index to the
parishes, cemeteries, and names of the interred who are discussed here. Vol. I
covers the counties (shires) of Ayr, Berwick, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Haddington,
Kirkcudbright, Lanark, Linlithgow, Peebles, Renfrew, Roxburgh, Selkirk, and
Wigton. Some inscriptions transcribed herein date from as far back as the 13th
century. Not every tombstone in every cemetery is transcribed, but a wealth of
local lore and history is presented for each place. See next entry for Vol. II.

ill., ind., glossary, 1996. The author, a genealogist based in Edinburgh, shares
her years of experience here, with advice not only on sources of information in
Scotland but on research strategies for working in Scottish records. This latest
edition explains the computer index program now in operation at New Register
House, Edinburgh, Scotland. The book includes a very helpful list of Scottish

1995. A dictionary-style exposition of place-name meanings. This is a fascinating

Dorward supplies root words and traces them back to their Celtic, Gaelic, or Old
English roots, so that readers know at a glance the meanings of hundreds of area

documents opens a window onto life and society in 18th and 19th century America.

biblio., 1997. Generously illustrated, including 12 full-page colour plates. This
entry in the "Warrior Series" explains the weapons, dress, armour, and tactics of
highland clansmen, and contains a chronology of battles in which they fought.

THE SCOTTISH SETTLERS OF AMERICA--THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES by Stephen M.
Millett. 234 pp., rep. 1998 (1996). The author is the editor of "U.S. Scots. The
Magazine of the Scottish-American Community." Dr. Millett also founded the
Scottish-American Studies Center, is a past convener of the Mid-Ohio Scottish
Heritage Association, and was regional commissioner of the Clan MacDougall
Society. His book covers the Scottish homeland and peoples; emigration; Scottish
settlements in the Chesapeake Bay area, the Carolinas and Georgia, New England and
N.Y., Penna., Del., and N.J. The role of Scots in the American Revolution is also

pp., ill., rep. 1997 (1995, 1997). Alphabetical lists of names found in manuscript
and printed publications, of Scots who served in any military capacity in the
colonies. Dobson supplies name, rank, unit, size and location of any land grant
awarded after service, and reference to source. Sometimes other data is given,
such as civilian occupation, names of family members, place from which the soldier

coats of arms, has aided many genealogists looking for British ancestors who were
noblemen or gentlemen. The three-volume set is arranged alphabetically, and
contains descriptions of coats of arms, crests, mottoes, etc. Some entries contain
data on family lines, titles, residence, etc. as well. A lengthy introduction
explains all aspects of heraldry, and includes an illustrated glossary. The print
