Thanks, Kay, for the link. I was fascinated to learn something new.
Clicking on "passementerie" gives this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passementerie which says "Passementerie or
passementarie is the art of making elaborate trimmings or edgings (in
French, passements) of applied braid, gold or silver cord, embroidery,
colored silk, or beads for clothing or furnishings." There is also an image
of an example.
