Subject: [GARFIELD] Marriage date for Elijah and Lorraine AVERILL
Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 07:27:01 -0600 (CST)
Hello again,
Another piece of info I received back from Leicester,VT. was a different
kind of record from an old book where the marriage of Elijah Garfield
and Lorraine Averill had been hand written and recorded. There had been
some question as to the actual marriage year that had been recorded on
the first marriage certificate I got a couple of years ago. This new one
I got this past week wasn't the easiest thing to read. I even scanned it
into my computer and enlarged it.
After all that, it still was a bit hard to make
out. The following is transcribed to the very best of my ability. The
spelling of the words is as they were written.
"They may Certify that on the 23 day of November 1790 I marries Elijah
Garfield to _?__ Lorrinn Avrill at Leicester in the County of Addison
__?_ Thomas Sawyer Just. peace.
February the 16 _?_ 1793 Rec & Entered the above certificate
Attest Peter White T. Clerk."
NOTE - At first glance the name Avrill could have been misread as
Morill.
So this means that the date on the marriage record I was sent 2 years
ago, is INCORRECT. Whomever, entered the date that Peter White recorded
and entered the marriage as their marriage date not their actual
marriage date.
This changes a few things doesn't it?
I also had Leicester check for a marriage, death and/or divorce for
Elijah for another wife who's first name was also suppose to be
Lorraine. No luck.
In light of this new info,I would like to propose that Elijah actually
had only one wife, Lorraine Averill. Since Elijah married Lorraine
Averill in November 1790, it is highly unlikely that he married a
Lorraine Morrill/Morrell in Nov. of 1790 also. This would also explain
why I could never find a death or divorce for a different mother, also
named Lorraine, on the birth records of his first two sons that were
born prior to 1793 in Leicester.
Well, I think I did pretty darn good this weekend. Two mysteries solved.
Your thoughts and comments please! Chrissy
