Dear Kathleen,
Here is the information I have on Francis:

THE FRENCHMEN'S GRAVE

This is a true story. Francis Gallagher and his father were standing on the road
and saw some soldiers coming. It was a lovely harvest day of 6th August 1798.
The soldiers were marching very quickly and as they came near the Gallaghers two
of them fell. Francis and his father ran to help them. They had collapsed with
fever and exhaustion. The French soldiers were coming from Castlebar where they
had beaten the English. They were on their way to Ballinamuck in Co. Longford 70
miles away.

Well, Francis knew no French and the French captain knew no English and Francis
was what was known then as a hedge schoolmaster. He knew Latin and so did the
Frenchman. So that was the way they communicated.

They moved on and Francis went in to the village and got the priest and buried the
two men in the field above the house.

Gallagher's store is the house where great grandmother was born. It has passed
out of the Gallagher family now, but the Frenchman's grave is still to be seen in
the field above the house. The Frenchmen's Grave is in the care of the National
Trust.
In the words of Mary Convey of Swinford, Co. Mayo in 1981

Francis Gallagher married an woman, name unknown. They had a daughter named Mary
Gallagher who married John Kennedy. They had 5 children that I know of: Mary,
Biddy, John, an unknown female, and Patrick Kenendy. Patrick, my ggrandfather
married Bridget Salmon and had 9 children. These Gallaghers obviously all stayed
in Ireland. I don't know if this helps at all.
