Dear Kathleen --
As with many of us I am trying to find my roots. My brick wall is my
Gallagher line. Due to family circumstances there was a break in the
family which makes my task more difficult than usual. My father lost all
contact with his Gallagher ancestors due to an unfortunate family
breakup. What I have been told is that my Gallagher line comes from county
Mayo and that my great grandfather Francis Joseph Gallagher emigrated to
the US, entering through the port of New Orleans. I don't have a year but
would guess it is probably late 1870's-early 1880's. He married Margaret
McCaffrey of county Sligo in Louisiana and they came north and settled in
southern Ohio. Their oldest son was my grandfather Francis Xavier Gallagher
born in 1886. Their other children were Joseph, William and Julia.
The reason I am writing to you is that I am curious about the Francis
Gallagher you mentioned from Esker, Swinford, Co. Mayo. Do you have any
information on this family line? From what I know of Irish naming customs
certain names were handed down in families with the first son being named
for the father's father and the second son being named for the mother's
father and so on. Francis seems to be a family tradition in my Gallagher
line. Therefore I am wondering whether your Francis Gallagher from county
Mayo could be any connection with my Gallagher line. Is it
possible? Thanks for any help you can give me.
