MAJOR J. B. DAVIS DIED LAST FRIDAY
FORMER CLERK OF SUPERIOR COURT OF NEWTON COUNTY AND WIDELY KNOWN GEORGIAN DIES
NEAR CENTURY MARK.
Major John B. Davis is dead.
This statement will bring sorrow to the people of Newton County where Major
Davis served the people so long and so efficiently and who was loved by the
people universally. He served as clerk of the Superior Court for thirty years,
giving up the office at the close of 1926, not offering for re-election. He
spent some time here and then with his wife moved to California and at the
time of his death was living with his son, Mr. Bert Davis.
Major Davis was born and lived all his life in Newton county until going west
a few years ago. He was a distinguished veteran of the Civil War and after the
war, taught school in the southern part of the county, followed various other
occupations until in 1886 he offered for the office of Clerk of Superior Court.
He served for thirty years, having opposition a few times and unopposed most of
the time and was never defeated, showing the high esteem in which he was held
by his home people. He was also widely known throughout the state. He was one
of Col. Lon Livingston's strongest friends and advisors during the twenty years
that Mr. Livingston served this district for congress.
The death of Major Davis, it is thought, was hastened by the death of his
elder son, Mr. Rogers Davis who died in Atlanta in June of this year after a
brief illness. The Major was ninety-seven years of age, and is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Corrine Davis, one son, Mr. Burton Davis and two grandsons, Alexander
and Jack Burton Davis, Alexander being the son of Rogers Davis and Jack the
son of Burt Davis.
