Retired Rail Veteran, R. L. Squires, Passes

Rites for Robert L. (Doc) Squires, 78, of 619 Kennesaw Avenue veteran of a
half-century of railroading on the old W. & A. and the N.C.& St. L. were held
Monday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Dobbins Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Turner
officiated. Burial was in Marietta City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dr. L. H. Atherton, Guy Northcutt, Harry Livingston, Jr.,
Judge James T. Manning, Harry Black and W. H. Benson Sr. Members of the Baracca
Class of the First Methodist Church of which he had been a member for 59 years,
served as an honorary escort.
Squires died Sunday around noon as result of a heart condition.
A native of Dalton, Squires moved with his parents to Atlanta at an early
age. He was a graduate of Atlanta's Boys High and attended the University of
the South at Sewanee Tenn., before being graduated in 1902 from the Atlanta
College of Physicians and Surgeons, now Emory University.
After three months practice, Squires quit his medical career to go to work
for the W. & A. Railroad as a firemen under his father's supervision. He became
an engineer in 1913 and operated steam engines and diesels until he retired in
1950. For the past several years he served as a bailiff for Judge James T.
Manning in Cobb Superior Court. His wife, the former Miss Dura Barnes, of
Marietta died in 1954. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive
Engineers.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Stokley Parks and Mrs. Ivan G.
Price, Marietta; Mrs. Ray Snyder, Etowah, Tenn.; four sons. James H. Squires,
Knoxville, Charles N., St. Louis, Mo.; and Robert L. and Jesse B., Marietta,
one sister, Mrs. Marvin Haley, High Point, N. C.; one sister-in-law Mrs. J. H.
Squires, Gainsville; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several
neices and nephews.
