The Marietta Journal
Death Of Mr. J. J. Northcutt, Sr.

Mr. Jesse J. Northcutt, Sr. after a lingering illness of many weeks, died
at his late home in this place on last Thursday night at 11:30 o'clock, aged 68
years. He was one of the oldest dry goods merchants in Marietta, whose name has
become familiar to nearly every household among the old settlers of the county.
He has always been recongnized as a man of scrupulous honesty, staightforward
in all his dealings, kind, courteous, and considerate. He has been a life-long
member of the Baptist Church, always upholding its doctrines and practicing its
precepts. He was a devoted husband and affectionate father, and his death
removes one of our best and most highly esteemed citizens.
He leaves a wife and eight grown children, six of whom are married. His
funeral took place on last Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at the Baptist Church,
Rev. G. S. Tumlin officiating. The Church was crowded beyond its seating
capacity, many persons had to turn away. The funeral sermon was appropriate in
all its parts, touchingly beautiful and impressively sad. The casket was
bestrewn with flowers. "At Rest" lettered a large floral offering.
The pall bearers were some of the old citzens of the place and county-Hon
George Robers, Capt. Smith Lemon, Mr. Green Bentley, Mr. H. Reid, Mr. W. M.
Dobbs, Dr. A. Reynolds, Sr., Hon. J. B. Blackwell, and Judge G. T. Carrie.
A large funeral procession of carriages and buggies followed the remains
to the city cemetery where the ceremonies were concluded at the grave. The
relatives have our sympathy in their bereavement.
