James W. Squires Died Wednesday
Was One of Oldest Residents of City and Veteran Railroad Man of W. & A.
James W. Squires, 76, veteran railroad engineer and citizen of Marietta,
died at his home, 731 Kennesaw Avenue, Wednesday, following a short illness.
"Capt. Jim Squires, as he was known by his most intimate friends, was born
in North Carolina on February 14th, 1843 and moved to Georgia with his parents
when only a boy. He entered the services of the Old State Railroad, now known
as the Western and Atlantic, operating between Atlanta and Chattanooga, and for
nearly fifty years has been in the service of this road.
During the Civil War he operated supply trains up and down this railroad
which was one of the chief lines of communication and supplies for the
Confederacy. A number of times his train was in skirmishes with raiding parties
of Union troops. After the line was put out of commission and captured by
Sherman's army he operated engines in other parts of the state until after the
war, when he resumed his old post at the throttle of one of the lines' engines.
Capt. Squires for many years was at the throttle of the engine that pulled
the Marietta accomodation, before the days of the trolley line, and later was
engineer on the Rome Express until retired by the railroad with a life pension
about five years ago.
Since his retirement from active service he had led a quiet life at his
home here, but has kept in constant touch with all his former associates in the
railroading business here and all along the line. He was probably known to more
people along the Western and Atlantic than any other railroad man on the line.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist church, of which he
was a member, Friday morning, and pallbearers will be from among his friends
and life-long associates of railroad men. Dr. W. T. Hamby will officiate and
will be assisted by Rev. J. H. Patton.
Captain Squires is survived by six children, J. H., Robert L., and T. L.
Squires, Mrs. Harry Williams, Mrs. T. C. Hunter and Miss Evie Squires.
Additional Comments:
James Squires lived on Kennesaw Ave. Marietta in Fair Oaks house now The
Marietta Educational Garden Center.
