Subject: [FRONTPAGE] Moving from Themes and Shared borders

For those of you who may be using FrontPage themes and shared
borders, and who might like to try moving away from them, this is an
example of what you can do. Is it a lot of work? Can be depending on
the size of your site. Is it worth it? Only you can answer that but
in my opinion YES.

Original site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheilaweston/index.htm
(although I notice this morning she has made some changes.

This is the template I made for this site using one of the ones I
offered in the past http://www.the-gearys.com/shelia/template.htm

The top menu, the left side menu and the footer all make use of FP
Includes. The background and masthead graphic are what she used
before. All the styling was moved to an external style sheet.

The includes are easily updated by changing just one file. All pages
are then changed. The only problem with this method is that all pages
need to be uploaded so the change will show. That is because Rootsweb
does not support frontpage server extension. If you use fp to publish
via ftp all pages are published automatically.

Compare the code on this page
http://www.the-gearys.com/shelia/ versus this page
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheilaweston/index.htm
and you will see a big difference.

The left menu is styled using the style sheet rather than the
graphics and fp navigation.

If you are using fp2003, this can be even easier to maintain by using
a dynamic web template. The top menu can be left off or used for a
section navigation. The left menu can also be changed to reflect
additional links to various sections.

Want to change the colors, change them in the style sheet, upload it
and the colors will change in everything it is attached to.

Shelia, if you want the files, I'll be happy to zip them up and send
them to you. Any of you who are interested in moving from themes and
shared borders to this layout, are free to use the files.
