Message Board Post:
I would very much appreciate some help in finding out how to trace my maternal great grandmother's birth certificate.
Her name is Rosalie Allemann. She married someone called Sidney George Perriam (not sure when, as traced lots of marriage records and can't find a marriage, but there must be one!).
She died on 14 Nov 1960 in Paddington, London at the age of 74, so that would make her born roughly in 1886. I understand she was of Swiss origin.
She had her first child, from what I can tell, in 1916 and my grandmother was born in 1927. My grandmother's name was Rose Marie, but it doesn't appear that she had the same father as the rest of Rosalie's children, as there was no name for the father on my grandmother's birth certificate. However, strangely on the wedding certificate between my grandmother and my grandfather, Rose Marie's surname is Perriam, but I understand she was brough up by a woman with the surname Best, but never legally adopted. As far as I can tell from my mother, she was given to this Best lady, as Rosalie could not afford to look after her. Obviously, in 1927, there was no legal adoption procedure, so I guess that is what happened - she acted as my grandmother's guardian.
I do apologise for this being long winded!
I know that by 1960 she was a widow, as it clearly states this on Rosalie Perriam's death certificate.
I understand she was a general domestic servant at the time of my grandmother's birth and there is a story that my grandmother's father was Italian. So it could be that my grandmother was illegitimate and that's why she gave her away, as it does seem odd that she moved from her place of work and residence at the time of my grandmother's birth from London to Brackendene, Hayes Common in Kent in 1927.
In a nutshell, at last you say, I understand it can be quite difficult to trace Swiss relatives, especially when you don't know what part of Switzerland they come from. However, I would really like to know how I could go about doing this, as I really would like to trace back further on her side, as I seemed to have come to a grinding halt.
As much as this is a birth question, I am also looking to find out when and how she came to the UK. As she seemed to be here in 1916.
Anyone's help would be most grateful.
Kind regards
Louise Urban
