I took a chance that I might be sending you info you already knew. It's always worth a shot.
I haven't lived in the Ocala area very long, so I don't know much history, but I did find this on the Internet which may be useful. I found it at http://www.mcintyre.com/UBB/LostPosts/000084.html. Hope it helps.

Here's a little bit that I found on C.H. Hulburd.
First, this website - http://www.ipsrealtor.com/heather_island_ad.htm - gives a short history of Heather Island in Florida, near Ocala. It's unsourced, but states: "In the early 1900's, Charles Hulburd, General Manager of the Elgin Watch Company began buying frozen out Orange Groves and other property to create his winter hideaway. By 1912, he had assembled over 3,000 Acres and built the Heather Island Mansion, a sprawling, impressive, white colonial style structure with ample room to accommodate Elgin Watch Company Executives, their friends and families who came to Florida to escape the harsh northern winters before the advent of central heating and indoor climate control." (I wonder who was left behind to run the Elgin factory in the winter?)

An on-line genealogy of the Hurlburt family - http://www.idsonline.com/hurlburt/ - includes Charles Hulburd and his family. In the notes for C.H. Hulburd it lists his occupation as "Capitalist", and gives this information on him: "A.B. Oberlin Coll., 1871; LL.B., New York U., 1873. President Elgin Natiional Watch Co. 1898 -; director Corn Exchange National Bank, Union Special Machine Co., Hulburd, Warren & Chandler. Resided in Chicago." The source for this is listed as Who's Who, but doesn't give a year.
