Subject: (FOW5-Custom Reports and Other Uses for Query

Hi, All-

In responding to Susan about using query with the burial report, she
suggested I post this to the list for any who aren't familiar with
it. Hope it helps.

When creating custom reports or many other tasks in FOW, one of the
most powerful tools out there is available to you - the query. With
this feature you can select just about any data out of your data
base. It allows you to narrow the output to just what you want.

In the case of the burial report, you can select only those people
who have a burial location listed. Going further, you can select only
those that are buried in a particular cemetery. I have a report which
prints only those people who have a place of death in a certain city
and have no burial location. That way when I go to that town to look
at cemeteries, I have a check list of people who died but haven't had
the burial location identified. I can then write the name of the
cemetery beside the name or, if only visiting one cemetery, write the
name at the top of the page and check those I find. When I go to
input the data, I use the find individual function, once again use
the query to select only those that don't have a burial location and
quickly update the data.

With the query function, you can export only the data you want, print
only the data you want or view only the data you want. I use it also
to export gedcoms and other data with all living individuals
eliminated. You don't have to use a third party program such as
Gedclean, etc.

You can use query anytime you have the option of selecting all or
selected individuals. You can then select individuals based upon
virtually any criteria you choose for virtually any field in the
database. You can select based upon a field being blank or not being
being blank, on it containing specific characters or terms, if it is
eaual or not equal to specific criteria, if it sounds like specific
items, etc. You can also deterine whether to select the individuals
who meet the criteria you select or those individuals who don't meet
the criteria.

The query makes FOW a very powerful data management tool for all of
us. The only thing that I would suggest to improve it (for those
Parson's people out there lurking) is the ability to save a query
with a particular report or output.

Hope some of you find this helpful. If you haven't used this in your
FOW yet, I highly recommend you give it a try. If it seems somewhat
intimidating to some of you, I'll be happy to help you learn how to
use it. Once you, you'll be hooked. It opens up a whole new dimension
and you'll find yourself doing things with your data you didn't think
possible. Gook luck and happy hunting.

Regards,

bB
