Hi y'all!
My great-aunt Emily BALLS, who was born in Colchester, used to talk of being 'in service' to a General (Major? Colonel?) Shute (I am guessing at the spelling).
Apparently he was in the army, and I remember she gave my father a horse's hoof with a brass plate attached which credited Gen. Shute's horse with saving his life (while losing its own), which apparently the SHUTE family had given her.
I think Emily would have worked there in the early 1900s to 1920s.
I am interested in learning about the Shute family, and where their house was. Any information would be appreciated.
