Hi Bruce
Obituaries in the national press in the UK are pretty much reserved for the rich and/or famous. Even in local papers, only someone who was prominent in the local community or who had some other claim to fame would normally merit an obituary as such. Death notices, which sometimes give a little biographical detail ("much loved father of Fred and Freda and grandfather of Sharon and Tracy" etc) would be a more likely find, nationally (in The Times or Daily Telegraph) for a well to do family or locally for "ordinary" folk.
Mary's will, or Arthur's (or both) might be a better way of finding out who they left behind.
Best wishes
Caroline
