Just to give another example of how lax things used to be, even as
recently as the late 20th century:

We got married in 1988, and as the wedding was to be in a non-conformist
church we had to do the necessary paperwork at Colchester Register
Office beforehand.

The formalities went something like this:

"Are you both over 18?" - "Yes"
"Are you both single?" - "Yes"
"Are you both British?" - "I am, she isn't"
"Do you have your passport on you, Madam?"

I handed over my passport, he wrote down my name, he gave it back to me.
My husband-to-be did not have to produce ANY kind of ID or documents,
and if I had lied and said I was British they would probably not have
asked me for any documents either.

I'm sure things have changed since then!
