I have just been talking to my cousin who was the community nurse in that
area. It was situated on Manor Road which leads from Chigwell to Woodford
Bridge.

The site was sold when the government reorganised mental health care.

It is now a housing development, she believes gated and including indoor
pools

I've just found a very informative webpage indeed, all about Claybury:

http://www.countyasylums.com/mentalasylums/claybury01.htm

More than worth a look!

It therefore was once apparently called the London County Asylum, so,
even though it was in Essex, it was after all most likely not the
[Essex] County Lunatic Asylum at Brentwood which does appear to have
been a different institution. The name on the old OS map is therefore
slightly misleading. Perhaps a search in 1901 for staff members at
"London County Asylum" might be worthwhile.

Regards,
Lawrence
